For decades, local people have been allowed free access to the parkland at Wentworth Castle. The National Trust took over the lease of the site in spring 2019 and despite initial assurances to the contrary, have slowly removed rights of access, except via the ‘welcome point’ (or cash register as it is commonly known). They have padlocked and blocked gates, and the head ranger has aggressively challenged walkers, calling them trespassers.
